Financial Aid

Approximately 35% of the students who attend Stuart Hall receive financial aid.  The School offers financial assistance based upon expressed need from families who apply through the School and Student Service by completing the  Parent Financial Statement (PFS), and forwarding the PFS and a copy of their most recent IRS Federal tax return (form 1040) directly to the School. You will need the Stuart Hall School Code #7540 to complete the PFS.

Applying for Aid

We ask that all families interested in learning about their qualification for financial aid complete an application through the School and Student Service (SSS) in order to determine eligibility. SSS stands for School and Student Service for Financial Aid. It is a service owned by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and used by over 2,300 K-12 schools and other organizations to help determine a family's ability to pay school costs. The service and process helps ensure that all schools use the same methods and objective procedures in evaluating your financial aid application. Stuart Hall School is a member of NAIS.

Here is the time line in the aid process at Stuart Hall:

December 15  to February 1   PFS completed and submitted to the SSS. You will need the Stuart Hall School Code #7540. Deadline for submission is February 1, 2010.

February 15   First-round allocations made to families with expressed need.

After March 1, the remaining aid is allocated as available to qualifying families.

April 16  Deadline for photocopies of IRS Federal Tax Form 1040  to Stuart Hall to substantiate the already submitted PFS. Stuart Hall reserves the right to alter an aid award if the Form 1040 does not reflect the PFS findings.

While the dates listed above are not "concrete deadlines," financial resources will be distributed to qualifying families on a first-come, first-served basis, so following these guidelines is recommended.  It is necessary to apply through SSS each year and provide the most recent Form 1040 in order to qualify for financial aid awards. If you have questions or need more information, please contact the Admissions office at 888-306-8926 or 885-0356.

Re-enrollment contracts will go out on February, 1, 2010 and are due back by March 1, 2010.

Frequently Asked Questions about Financial Aid

Do independent schools get financial aid money from the government?

No. All financial aid for independent schools comes from the schools themselves, which often use a combination of budgeted funds and money raised from donors.

Does applying for financial aid affect a student's chances for admission?

No. Admissions and financial aid decisions are made independently. All families interested in financial aid should apply. Stuart Hall bases financial aid awards on demonstrated need.

How do I apply for financial aid? How are awards determined?

Parents must complete a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) and submit it along with the appropriate fee to School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, NJ. Please see the link in red above under Financial Aid.

Awards made are based on a standardized calculation derived by SSS. This calculation considers income, assets, liabilities, family size, and the number of children attending tuition-charging institutions. After allowances for living necessities and taxes, discretionary income is considered available for education on a sliding scale. Families with larger earnings and assets are expected to make greater contributions.

Does Stuart Hall School offer merit scholarships?

Stuart Hall does not offer merit scholarships. Financial awards are based on a family's demonstrated need and not on academic, athletic, or other merit considerations.

Do financial aid awards change from year to year? What if our family circumstances change?

Financial need and awards are recalculated every year, using current information. If there is little change in a family's circumstances, one can expect that awards will be made at a similar level.

Are there special requirements for students who receive financial aid?

There are not. All students are expected to maintain solid academic and personal standing within the Stuart Hall School community.

What happens in cases of divorce, separation, and single parents?

In cases of divorce or separation, Stuart Hall School may require both natural parents to apply for financial aid.

Should I apply if I am not sure our family will qualify?

We find that family circumstances differ greatly and factors other than income affect award decisions. Stuart Hall is committed to meeting the need of a broad spectrum of families.

Is the information I provide kept confidential?

All applications for financial aid are confidential.

Can I pay my tuition by credit card?

You may do so if you choose a payment plan and pay through Tuition Management Services (TMS). Payment plans offered at Stuart Hall are two, four, ten or twelve payments. Please contact the Admissions Office if you have questions about TMS, 888-306-8926 or 885-0356.
