Progression Through the Curriculum
Promotion from one level to the next is dependent upon demonstration of reasonable mastery at that level. Students who pass a course but demonstrate insufficient mastery for success in a more advanced course may be required to repeat the course. Summer school may be required to make up for deficiencies. Students who accelerate their curricular progression and complete the highest level offered in a discipline at Stuart Hall may qualify for Mary Baldwin College courses. Requests are to be made to the Academic Dean who will review such requests and who will determine if the requested class fits into the Stuart Hall student´s schedule. Permission to attend Mary Baldwin College is a privilege given to students exhibiting serious intent and a commitment to this obligation. Parental approval is also necessary.
* For students with a diagnosed, documented language learning disability, the foreign language requirement may be waived. **Music, Dance, Drama, or Studio Art meet the Fine Arts requirement when taken as yearlong courses. Students need prior approval (given by the Head of the Arts Department, the Academic Dean, and the Head of School) before taking private art, music, or dance lessons as a cocurricular activity or as a graded independent study course for credit(s) in the Fine Arts. Two years of Chorus = 1 unit/credit. Dance at the Staunton Academy of Ballet: 1 year = 1 unit/credit. Music: 2 years of private lessons = 1 unit/ credit. NOTE: Seniors must pass all of their yearlong courses and each semester course at Mary Baldwin College to graduate. Students entering mid-year may be requested to take placement exams and, depending on results and teacher recommendations, will be placed at their appropriate skill and developmental level, regardless of previously earned credits. Students entering mid-year from schools on block scheduling may find it difficult to accommodate their schedule here.
