Residence Life
Mission
We know
that neither teaching nor learning cease with the end of classes each day; they
merely take on more subtle forms.
Understood in this light, the Stuart Hall boarding program is the
fullest embodiment of our commitment to educate the whole person, Mind, Body,
Heart, and Spirit. That commitment is
the foundation of the Residence Life Mission:
"Residence
Life at Stuart Hall School
creates a nurturing environment that teaches young women to understand
themselves in the context of their community, encourages them to both serve
that community and to be leaders within it, and to develop a reverent respect
for the world around them and an undying passion for the people who live in it."
Our
Residence Life Program at Stuart
Hall School
is a partnership between the staff-the Dean of Students, the Residence Life
Coordinator, Dorm Parents, and On Campus Faculty-and the students: Prefects,
Hall Assistants, and Dorm Council.
Dorm Parents and On Campus Faculty
The
Residence Life Program at Stuart Hall creates a nurturing community in
accordance with its Mission
by employing a staff specially trained and well suited to support our boarding
students. Dorm Parents are adults who
live on dorm and supervise a specific hall, assist students with life away from
home, and provide a School presence in evenings and on weekends. On Campus Faculty work at Stuart Hall and
live either on campus or on dorm, and serve in roles comparable to those of
Dorm Parents. A member of the On Campus
Faculty or a Dorm Parent is on duty at any given time to monitor student
permissions and sign-outs, secure the building, distribute medicine, proctor
study hall, and otherwise ensure that the standards and policies of Stuart Hall
are maintained. Our On Campus Faculty
and Dorm Parents bring a wealth of experience and a diversity of talent making
our boarding population into a warm and vital community.
Prefects and Hall Assistants
Sustaining
a caring environment at Stuart Hall is a responsibility of all members of this
community, not only the adults. To this
end, experienced boarding students may become Hall Assistants and then
Prefects. These young women form the
backbone of the student body, acting as mentors to newcomers, friends to
returners, and leaders by example to all.
They are assigned to specific halls, where they help to maintain a clean
living space and promote a positive atmosphere.
Prefects are a valuable link between their peers and the Residence Life
Staff; additionally, there is an international Prefect who acts as liaison to
the Staff for her fellow international boarders.
Dorm Council
The Dorm
Council provides boarders with the opportunity to shape their own residential
experience at Stuart Hall. Council
members are elected in the first month of school and meet with the Residential
Life Coordinator weekly thereafter. The
Residential Life Coordinator works with the Dean of Students to address the
concerns of the Dorm Council.
