Arts Print E-mail
Mrs. Barbara Coyle Holt discusses art. What's the key to unleashing your creativity, your passion, your inner voice? At Stuart Hall we care about what kind of person you are and can become. We want to cultivate in you an inner awareness, heighten your perceptions, and develop your caring, your compassion, and your self-awareness. We have chosen to do that through the arts.

That's why we have created an environment that encourages artistic expression. Wherever you turn, you'll see and feel the presence of art - from the Middle School halls displaying the latest student drawings to the lounge area outside the library featuring outstanding senior projects.

Every student has the opportunity to draw, sculpt, sing, perform, and play an instrument. That's because Stuart Hall gives you real experiences in the visual arts, drama, and music.

The goal of the Arts Program at Stuart Hall is to support the development of all students' knowledge and appreciation of Art, Music, and Theatre.  Courses in those three areas are available to every student. In addition, each student has the opportunity to participate in after-school activities in the arts.  Different activities are available in Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Arts Emphasis

For those students whose interest and commitment qualify them to concentrate in the arts, Stuart Hall offers a college preparatory degree with an "Arts Emphasis" in Art or Music and/or Theatre.  The designation "Arts Emphasis" appears on the transcript of the student who successfully completes the program.

Three sections of Art are offered annually.  Students working towards an Arts Emphasis degree in visual art take two sections annually of the course entitled "Art for Art Emphasis Students."  Studio activities are offered after school throughout the academic year, and Art Emphasis students are required to participate in at least one of these.

The school also offers annually one section of Theater (Acting and Production) and one section of Public Speaking/ Oral Interpretation.  These are available to all Upper School students, but students working towards a degree with performing arts emphasis may take the courses more than once: the material and approach will develop as the student's expertise matures.

Extra-curricular opportunities in the Theater include participation in the Virginia Theatre Association Conference in the Fall of each year.  There are at least three plays students may audition for each school year - the VTA one act; The Fall Upper School Play; and the Spring Upper School Musical.  Students also have numerous chances for technical work.  Field trip opportunities to local productions are also available.

Stuart Hall also offers a course annually in Music Appreciation and Performance.  These are available to all Upper School students, and may be repeated, as the material and approach will develop to suit the student's level of knowledge and skill.

After school activities in Music include Upper School Chorus and Upper School Orchestra, each twice a week.

Students working towards a college preparatory degree with an Art Emphasis must take two Art courses and successfully complete one after-school Art activity per year.  Students wishing a Performing Arts emphasis must complete either two courses and one activity or one course and two activities annually.
