FINE ARTS EMPHASIS: ART, THEATRE, MUSIC
Art Emphasis, Theatre Emphasis, Music Emphasis The goal of the Fine Arts Program at Stuart Hall is to support the development of all students' knowledge and appreciation of Art, Theatre, and Music. Courses in these three areas are available to all students. In addition, all students have the opportunity to participate in after-school activities in the arts. These activities are organized to correspond to the three sports seasons, and with very few exceptions students will choose each season between fine arts, athletics, and other after-school activities. In rare cases, a student may be given permission to participate in more than one activity each season, assuming he/she can meet all responsibilities. For those students whose interest and commitment qualify them to concentrate in the fine arts, Stuart Hall offers a college preparatory degree with an emphasis in Art, Theatre, or Music. The designation "Art Emphasis," "Theatre Emphasis," or "Music Emphasis" appears on the diploma of the student who successfully completes the program. Requirements for Art, Theatre, or Music Emphasis: Students must be in the program a minimum of two consecutive years, 11th and 12 grades. (Exceptions may be made for students who transfer to Stuart Hall for their last year only.) Students must complete a capstone experience in their last year in the program. For Art Emphasis students, this is the portfolio. For Music and Theatre Emphasis students, this is a special focused activity. To enter the program, students must complete an application form and be approved by the director of the program and the academic dean. Art Emphasis students annually take the two-period Studio Art course plus a one-half credit Art History course and participate in at least one additional art activity, usually after school. The activity may consist of additional individual time in the studio as agreed on with the instructor. Theatre Emphasis students follow a set curriculum of at least one course per year plus two additional activities annually. The courses are 1) Introduction to Theatre, 2) Acting Studio, 3) Shakespeare in Performance, and 4) a Senior Capstone experience. Activities include participation in at least two school productions annually. Music Emphasis students also follow a set curriculum of at least one course per year plus two additional activities annually. The courses are 1) Music Appreciation, 2) Music Theory, 3) AP Music Theory, and 4) a Senior Capstone Experience. Activities include chorus, orchestra, ensembles, and assisting with middle school chorus and orchestra. With permission of the Music faculty and the Academic Dean, students may receive academic credit for music lessons outside Stuart Hall during the school year.
